The late Colonel Stuart Newall. C.8., was buried in the Karuri Cemetery yesterday afternoon,, with full military honours. The funeral left Hunny Street, at 2.15. Tho cortege was headed by a firing party, composed of members of the R.N.Z.A., under Lieutenant Parkinson, and then followed the Trenfhain Band. Tho coffin, borne on <i gun carriage supplied by the E.N.Z.A., was draped villi the flag which the deceased had, carried with him during tho South African war, while also on the carriage were floral tributes, including a wreath from the. sloff and patients of King George V Hospital, Rolorua. The high esteem, in which Colonel Newall was 'held as a soldier was evidenced by the largo representation of t,l'e military, those present including Sir James Allen (Minister of Defence), Major-General Sir Alfrpd Robin (general officer commanding the New Zealand forces), Brigadier-General G. S. Richardson (general oliicer in charge of administration), and Brigadier-General D. 'J. Mt'lavin (director-general of the medical service). Also among (ho followers were a number of Maori war veterans, and members of St. Andrew's Church, of which the deceased was an old member. Colonel Newall was for some years in charge of King George V Hospital at Rolorua, and, at the request of Colonel Borneau, commanding officer, that institution was represented by Lieutenants K. E. Luke and Prebble, Former pationts at Rotonin. Mrs Williams, of Waihi, o daughter of the deceased, ami Mr. Williams, son-in-law, were tho chief mouners. and the pall-bearers weret'olonels Piudy, Collins, Campbell, Gardner, Standish, and Andrews. The service at Hie graveside was conducted by Chaplain-Captain S. Robertson Orr, and tho Rev. J. Gibson Smith.

Mr. John Proiise, of Wellington, has been engaged to sing in "Elijah'' by the Dunedin Choral Society on August l(i. Mr. R 51. Hasolden, at one time M.P. for Paten, but latterly of South. Africa, lield tho rank of lieutenant-colonel in the South African Forces during the war. The death occurred on Tuesday of an old resident of Kaikoura, Mr."George Eaton. Tho deceased, who was 81 years of age, arrived in Kaikoura in lS!i7, and engaged in farming 'pursuits at Kineaid Downs, where ho resided for 52 years. In the early days he followed mining operations in Victoria, .also at Gabriel's Gully. He served on the County Council for nearly 15 years, and was'keld in the highest respect by all who knew him. Mr. Robert Martin Wallis, who died in Auckland on Monday, .aged 7G, was the sou of one of New Zealand's earliest settlers, the late Rev. James Wallis, a Methodist missionary, who arrived in New Zealand' in lftit. He was born nt Waingaroa and was married in 187t to the youngest daughter of Cuptain Thomas Wing, late harbourmaster at Onehunga. Clue of his sou-, is Captain A. Wallis, of the steamer Fiona.
