£125,000,000 FOR WAR CHARITIES

UNITED KINGDOM'S. IMMENSE EFFORT.The world's greatest war has produced as an antidote the world's greatest philanthropic effort (states tho "Daily News ). Even after making every allowance for I,he vast scale of operations, the figures for England alone are staggering. Much of the money has been raised and administered locally, so that only estimates. based on selected examples, can be given; but some. of _ the great central funds can be dealt with more exactly. Here are a few of the latest figures British Red Cross and Order of St. John ; 19,300,000 National Relief Fund (Prince of Wales') (1,517,000 Y.M.C.A 2,743,000 King George's Fund for Sailors 500,000 Clim-eii Army (war wort) 820,000 Queen Alexandra Day Fund 800,000 In a certain sense, all charitable effort during the war has been t'Tr "war work," and no very clear line, therefore, can bo drawn. This is particularly so in the case of funds such as Queen Alexandra's, which are allocated in great part to'hospitals. The greatest individual organiser of philanthropy during the war lias been Miss May Beeinan. She has raised over it' 12,000,00 1,000,000 by the "Our Day" collections, over .£750,000 on the four Queen Alexandra Rose days since the outbreak of war, and .1250,000 for other funds in the same period. The calculations that were first made, after careful inquiry, by tho late Mr. W. E. Dowding, point to an annual income for war charities in tlie United Kingdom of close on tC20,000,C00. Thus a grand total is reached in tho neighbourhood of ,£115,000,000. To this must now lie addeil at least another J!10,000,000 for war memorials. The aggregate sum might roughly bt> divided up as follows:— Relief of distress and resettlement of men 35,000,000 Kick and wounded ~ 30,000,000 Comfort.? 10,000,000 Entertainments 5,000,000 For our allies 30,000,000 Miscellaneous (personal expenses, etc.) 5.000,000 War memorials ....?.. 10,000,000 Total .£125,000,000
