DEFENCE OF POISON GAS
Brigadier-General Amos A. Fries, head of thc_ chemical service of the American Expeditionary Force, is quoted in "Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering" as having described tho use of poison gas as "the most humane method of fighting if both sides are prepared for it." General Fries, on his return from France, declared that 30 per cent, of the American casualties in action, and only 5 per cont. of the deaths, were'due to gas. There was no authenticated case of permanent blindness from gas. The -use of chemicals is suggested for police wci;k, and particularly if there is to be an 'International police, force, because it can be made effective witnout Vtvolving fatal casualties or maiming. Tho possibilities of tear gas in bringing about the bloodless defeat of savages by causing temporary blindness are also , oitcd.
