Uv Aunncifttlnn Ouhodin, August 7. The Union Steam Ship Company's Ijacnue Dartford arrived at Cailao on August 1 from Newcastle,' after a passage of 65 days. A cable message to the company's head office states that ,tho master, Captain Donald M'Kcnzie. died at sea on July 18. Captain M'Kcnzie was born at Auckland, and had a large experience in the trndo, serving as chief officer and master of the Schooner Jluiu. He was appointed in 1917 master of the Dartford, wiien the vessel refitted for sea service, and mado several successful voyages between New Zealand, Australia, and American ports. Ho was about <0 years of age.

The vessel has actually got that amount of coal on board, but of the total tonnago 7200 tons are for the railways, and the remainder for tho* vessel's own use. THE WESTERN COMET. The Western Comet completed her Lyttelton loading on Tuesday afternoon, tho cargo consisting of 1600 casks of pelts and tallow,, a. quantity of bales of leather and rabbit Skin.-i, and also general merchandise. She sailed for Auckland tho same afternoon, and is duo there to-day. She will leave that port on Tuesday next for New York and Boston, via Panama. i PATEENA DUE THIS MORNING. The southerly weather yesterday delayed the arrival of the Paleena, aud a radio message received from the vessel sto-ted that sho would make port early this morning. The Patcena is t,o return to Onchunga at midnight to-night. A NEW SHIPPING COMPANY. The Wcllington-Taranaki 'Steamship Co., I.td.,' has acquired tho principal interests in the Wellington Steamship Co., '!itd. (owners of the liaden Powell! a-s from August 1. Mr. It. L. Iteid. lato of Messrs. Kins6y and Co., Christchurch, is to inanago tho new company, which will shortly be registered as' a limited liability company, with its head offico at New Plymouth.

TAHITI SAIL'S TO-MORROW. Tlio Union Company advised yesterday that the Tahiti will sail for Vancouver, via Honolulu, to-morrow at noon, JIOKOIA DUE TO-MORROW. The Mokoia left Auckland at 10.30 p.m. on Wednesday for Napier and Wellington, and she is due in port to-morrow. She is to sail in the evening for Dunedin direct, takinfe no cargo. SUFFOLK SAILS. - The Federal-Shire liner Suffolk left yesterday morning for Liverpool, via Panama. PRINZESSIN LEAVES. Early yesterday morning the left, the wharf and anchored in the stream, whilst her passengers and crew underwent medical examination. Being declared "clean," the vessel left shortly before noon_for Newcastle. THE RUAHINE. The Ruahine arrived from Lyttelton yesterday at noon. The vessel is scheduled to leave at noon on Saturday for Plymouth, via, Panama. AT PANAMA. Two units of tho New Zealand Shipping Company's fleet, the Whakatanc, which left Wellington on July 5, and the Rimutaka, which cleared this port on July 10, arrived at Panama on August 3. REMUERA AT HOME. Oable advice has hen received by the New Zealand Shipping Company to the effect that tho Kemuera,. which cloared Wellington on June 21, arived at, London on August 5. TEE SHROPSHIRE, To contimio Homeward loading tho Shropshire left Wellington yesterday afternoon for Napier. The vessel is to return to Wellington, about August 16, and sail for Liverpool, via l'anaina, on August 20.

Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that the Hippie, which sails on Saturday for Napier, takes no town cargo. Tho vcbscl has accommodation for several passengers. Tilt! twin-scrcw steamer Albionstar, built by Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., Ltd., to the order of the Shipping Controller, and purchased by the Bluo Star Line, Ltd., London, ran successful trials in Belfast Lough on Juno 11. The Albionstar is 450 ft. long by 58ft. beam, with a gross tonnage- oi V9CO. and has been constructed under spccial survey. Tho hold and the 'tween decks are specially clear of all obstructions, and arranged for tho carrying of frozen meat cargoes. Tho propelling machinery consists of two sets of high-powered triple-expansion reciprocating engines. Tho new vessel's originpJ name was the War Hecuba. Messrs. Workman, Clark ■ and Co., Ltd., will shortly launch a high-class steamer named Port Caroline for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, Ltd.

Mr. Arthur Jclfrey, a Sunderland theatre manager, and formerly a- shipyard worker, has patented an invention for the improved plating of ships. Instead of the usual flat :plate,' his device is provided with longitudinal curves, and in use two plates are placed back to back, so that the corrugations form longitudinal tubes or chambers. The result is a hull of.enormous strength, owing to the tubular construction. The chambers can bo filled with water for ballast or ivith cork or other suitable material for buoyancy.
