MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE CASES,
Captain Hcnnnh and Mr. J. \V. Ellison, J.P.'s, heard the cases at tho Magistrate s Court yesterday. . John Jiklward Johnston was remanded till to-day on a charge of theft of a portmanteau and contours, valued at Ala 105., the property of Stanley Cordon William James Williamson, who was charged with breaking and entering tho premises of Annie Duffy at Lyall JMj last week, and stealing a number ot articles of a total value of la, was.relanded for a week on the application of his counsel, Mr. 0. W. Medish. JJail was allowed in the suru.ibf .£SO and two aecurities of £25 each. A further remand for a week was granted in the case of Thomas Patrick Drury, who was charged with being an idle and disorderly person. On a charge of theft of £2 10? the properly of John Muir, Charles Iredenck Butler iras remanded for a week on the application of the police. In this case Police-Inspector Marsnck said that there had been a number of thefts from hotels recently, arid tho police, desired to make further investigations. . . When charged with being an incorrigible no-rue and a vagabond, Joseph Henry Francis Donnelly pleaded guilty, and admitted that he had beggod alms and had been previously convicted for being n rogue and vagabond, but desired to make a statement, to explain tho circumstances. For the prosecution, it was proved that the accused had begged alms from a constable who was in plain clothes in Cambridge Terrace, and the accused did not dispute this. On his own behalf, tho accused made a strong plea, for leniency, and told the Court that he had iiOt'been given a chance, and Mr. Ellison interjected and said, "I see you have U previous convictions-yon at least seem to have a good list of chances missed! The accused further stated that he had come to Wellington from a position in the Wairarapa during the wet weather, and lie could go back to work tgam right away if he were given a .chance. The Bench deoided to give Donnelly another opportunity to make good, and ordered hint to come up for sentence when called upon provided he left Wellington at once. The accused said ho was prepared to do so, and thanked the Bench for their leniency. . . A fine of 40s. and costs was imposed i,n Charles Cowie Durham, who was charged with behaving in a threatening manner in Stafford Street on Tuesday. On a further charge of bavin? trespassed on the private property of Lilia Glew, he was connoted and discharged. There had been a dispute between the accused and Mrs. Glew, and, according to the evidence, the former made use of very obieciionable language, to the complain- " For insobriety. John Russell was fined 205.. and John M'lvimron was fined 10s. On changes of drunkenness and breaches of their prohibition orders. Thomas B'ake and George Paville were 1 remanded till to-day.
