The monthly committee meeting of the District Nursing Guild of. St. John was held on Mou-.lay afternoon at the residence of Mrs. W. H. S. Moorhousn •Ihere were present: Mesdauies Moorhcuse (presiding), Balcouibo Brown, A. A Corrijran, K. Pearson, Misses M. E. L. Robieson, M. Macandrew, and Rowley :hon. secretary). The report of the nurses showed that fourteen patients were registered durinj: the month, eight discharged, one admitted to hospital, and ura.tv-iliree remain on the register. Durimr the month 278 visits were paid by the nurses to patients' homes, and fortyf've patients* wore treated at the office. Gifh of soup, puddings, cakes, sandwiches, 'an eiderdown quilt, and clothing were acknowledged with thanks' from Mesdames Moorliouse, Jennings. Harrison, Mayo, and Thompson, the Ngaio Stocking League and four anonymous donors. Subscriptions wevo received as follow:—Mrs. Balconibe Brown, £2 25.; aire. R. Pearson, ,£1 Is.; Miss Robieson, .-El Is.; an anonymous donor, ss. Tho nurses would he very glad to receive gifts of clean white rag for bandaging, etc. A voto of sympathy with Mrs. Gibbons in her recent bereavement was passed by the committee.
Private advice ha? been received of ilic death-of Mrs. Prank H. Cc.rr, at Auckland, on Sunday. Mrs. Carr was provident of tho Society for the Health of Women and Children. Dunedin, and was closely connected with tho movement sine--' its inception by Dr. Trnby King. Mie was the first secretary of the'society. That was in IMS. and in 1913 she was annotated president, having held the position ever since. Her health of late had been unsatisfactory, and some lime afro she-went to Auckland with her' husband, who is at present manager for'the South British Insurance Company in that city. The deceased lady was' previously, married, her former husband being the late Mr. E. 11. Carew, S.M.
Mrs. A. E. W. Snlt, who has been spending throe months in i\ew Zealand, after three years and a half abroad on active service with the N.Z.A.N.S., is returning to Knglnmi by the Shropshire to rejoin her husband, 'Captain Salt, of Hie Armv School of Education, Cambridge University.

An old colonist, Mis. Samuel- Hardloy, spin., died.at her son's residence, Ponsi'iibv. Auckl.i'id, on Saturday, aged 82 rears. Mrs. Hardley arrived at Port Chilmers in the sailing ship Slni- of 'fasmama, in ISli:!, accompanied by her litisbud and tlireo children. She passed .lliroiisih the stirring times of tho gold rushes in Otago. and on tho discovery of Koid on the West Coast of tho South Island, the faim'.v moved there, living at llokitika, Stafford Town, Oknrito, Brighton, Charleston, and Kmnara. Mrs Hardley experienced some trying tunes, frequently tramping over bush tracks alongside her children, who were transported in gu> cases strapped to tho fides of ii packhorse. Subsequently slio :?sidi(i at Asbburlor and Hamilton. She leav<-s five sons, besides thirty-five grandchildren and thro? great-grandchildren. Air. Samuel , Hardley died about two years ago. ,
An interesting wedding was celebrated at St. James Church, Lower Hutl, yesterday afternoon, (ho norths being Miss Margaret 11. Humfreys and Mr. H. Hodsou. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Hansoll. The Ivridt who was given away by her unci" (>!:. 11. Gordon) woro a frock of ivory sati l with silver trimmings. J'hn oliiof bridesmaid (.Mis'! Evelyn Matthews) wore saxe-bluo crepo do chine, finished wi;h lenion-shadcd ninon, and a black not lint The two other bridesmaids wore in white voile, and all three carried small posies of yellow freesias and maideniair fern. After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of Mrs. .11. Gordon, Main Eoad, Lower Huft. Air. and Airs. Hodson intend making their homo in Blenheim.
Islar.d Bay Bowling Club. A most' efijoyable "ladies' night" was given by the Island Bay Bowling Club in St. '.'Hilda's Scl.colroom, Island Bay, on I'nesdav evening. The function was an exceptionally successful one, mid cleur'.v demonstrated that « bowling club has a. very apparent social side tu it which is not all "bias." Tim first part of the entertainment took the form of a collect', which was thoroughly appreciated. Mr. C. C. Odlin, president of the club, rrosiocd, and vocal and instrumental itcmo were given by Miss Jones, tho Island Bav Glesi Party, and Messrs. G. Hood. W. Church. \V. M'Keown, V. Brown. A. 1?. Barnes, E. A. Horron, W. 0. Moman, W. J. Ferkins, and J. 0. S'iorinud Mr. J. Allen ably acted as accompanist. A.novel item, which evoked much merriment, was a scries of Limer;c.fs sung by several members of tho club, ■vhieii endeavoured to express to the ladies tho club's- appreciation of their efforts in providing Iho bowlers with aflernooii tea during Iho bowling season. \t flie close of the concert Messrs. A Hockey Dance. The'annual dance of (lie Wellington Ladies* Hockey Association was held in St. Peter's Hall, Ghuznee Sireei., last evening and was very lately attended. Tho hall had been very prefiily and elaborately decorated for tile occasion, a network of coloured narrow siieamers iuiving been carried overhead from side to sido of the room and the w.lls having been .decorated with fern lcn\es, foliage, and lings. Quantities of flags had also been suspended from the ceiling and the lights woro softened w il-li coloured shades. Brightly coloured balloons also-added a pretty touch of colour to tho general effect. Flags and foliage decorated the supper room, and tho tables were arranged with s-piing flowers. Tho chaperons were. Mesdames Cooper, J. Cusaek, and S. J. Tucker. Tho committee responsible for the dance were the Misses Simon, in palest pink silk mid net; Nolan, heliotrope silk dnipwl with cream net; M'Lean, crimson velvet and cream not; Yorston, sa-xe blub silk; Cook, M'Murra-y, Dick, and Messrs. J. C. Cusaek, Needham, Edwards, Hugo, Selig, Devonport, and A. Manning. Iho lion, secretary, Mrs. B.' Watt, was in black charmeuse and net. Returned Soldiers' Bail, To make arrangements for the forthcoming returned soldier,-;' ball, to be held early next month, a meef.ri'? was held at the club yesterday afternoon Mr. J. Harper presided, and thoi's were also present Mesdames Preston. Harper, Stott, Hyams, Miss Speed, Messrs Wilson, Aldridge, Boiilson, Maxwell, Curtuyne, and Drew. ■ Mj. Harper outlined the ftleps that had already been taken in regftrt) to the arrangements and said that it hail been decided to hold tho ball on September », and the Town Hall had been secured for that date. An executive cmrinittce from tho association had been set up, consisting of Messrs. Harper, Aldridge, Smith, Brew, and Morpeth. Mr. Harper moved that all present (with the executive) form Ueinselvcsinto a general committee, wlii:h was done. Mrs. Boden, who was unable to be.present Mrs. Jtacßivnn, U-ionel J. G. Hughes, D.5.0., .and Mr. JCilgour were added to tho eommitte? Mr. Aldridgc was elected secretary for the ball. After some discussion it was decided that ineinbers of the Upturned Soldiers' Association should be nolificd by advertisement that they could obtain tickets from the secretary as owim: to, the number of returned '.soldiers being now so great, it was impossible to send out l personal invitations. This., .however, would bo done in the ca : c of civilians. For the latter the price of Ihe double licket would, bo one guinea; for returned soldiers ten shillings; an extra lady's.ticket (for the latter) being "v .Cd .. A lady's single licket would be 10s. Gd August 81 was fixed as the closing date for all acceptances or applications for ticket's. It was decided that the invitations should bo minted and issued as soo.i as possible. A finance,committee, consisting' of M.r. Harper, Mr. Wilson, and the secretary, was sot nn. Arrangements for the music were, discussed, and.will be reported upon at the next meeting to be held next
It is anticipated that Ihe ball will bo an even greater sucwis than on tho two previous occasions, and judging bv the keenness with which nooplo are attending dances this winter it should be very largely attended.
