♦ STOP-WOEK MEETING BUSINESS. A "stop-work" meeting of tho Wellington Waterside Workers' Union was 'held yesterday morning, commencing at 8 o'clock. In the absence of Mr. L. Glover (president), who is on a visit to Auckland, Mr. L. Tremayno occupied tho chair to open the meeting. Thero ivas a largo attendance of members. The returning officer (Jlr. T. Bates), who supervised the recent ballot for the annual election of office-bearers of the union, read .his report, which was adopted. The office-bearers for tho ensuing year are as follow:—President, Mr. L. Glover; vice-president, Mr. T. Brindle; secretary, Mr. J. G. Bruce; as : sistant secretary, Mr. James Lnurensqn; No. 1 department deopsea stevedores, Messrs. B. Brigdcn, M. Carlson, J. O'Donnell; No. 2 stevedores (intercolonial and coastal), Messrs. M. Byino, A. Garrod, D. M'Ewan; coal department, Messrs. M. Broadhurst, T. Cartwrighi, John O'Brien; Harbour Board department, Messrs. B. Ceoley, L. Hennessey, J. Smart; disputes committee, Messrs. A. Agnew, J. G. Frew; treasurer, Mr. W. J. Bassett; trustees, Messrs. E. Harrison, A. Bolton, and S. G. Jones, sen.

Mr. T. Brindle, the new vice-president, then occupied the chair. The benefits and advantages of the patent hawser disc and trap combined, invented by Mr. 11. L. Worthington to entrap rats that attempt to pass up or down ships' hawsers, were discussed. The members passed a resolution unanimously favouring the use of the invention on all ships' lines. They were at a loss 1 jo understand why the Government holds in abeyance the Ordor-in-C'ouncil com- , polling the use of the- traps on all ships, more particularly now owing to the risk of infection by plague and influenza, the danger of which was eo imminent. It viw decided that a deputation wait on tho Minister regtmling tho rat-traps. Messrs. J. Bead and Winstanloy. of tho Wellington Co-operntive Stores, addressed tho meeting on tho subject of benefits accruing to those supporting the stores. A vote of thanks was accorded the speakers. It was decided to ask tho Watorsifle Federation officers to wait on the Minister of Marine in regard to the question of imposing the new marine regulations, and to urgo that more power he given to the inspectors of sarins iir administerin? tho regulations. It was resolved that a further ballot lie held to decido whether it should be made compulsory far all members of tho union to join the Sick and Accident Benefit Club. Tha dates fixed for the ballot wero August U and 15. Mr. E. E. Ciinham was appointed returning officer, and Messrs. T. Bates and G. voyco 6orutinoers. Tho following motion was passed:— "That this meeting emphatically protests against tho military and resources of Britain being used by the ruling class Government thoreof to mako war on the working-class Governments find peoples of liiissia, Hungaryi etc., in the interests of reactionary forces and the international plutocrats."
