REMITS FOR SOLDIERS

THE PRIVILEGE' TICKETS,

Many soldiors are in poisession of four .weeks' railway privilege tickets, and as definite instructions have not been published witlfl. regard to these there has been some misunderstanding as to .whether tho tickets are valjd under tlio new railway ' regulatirais, ohd whether tho permit to travel is required or not. Tho Defence Department states that the Railway Department has advised that no soldier who is in ■ possession of his privilege ticket will be refused permissionto travel, provided ihero is a'train available. It will, however, bo necessary for him to obtain a permit, and n. permit will 1» granted on application to ono of the Permit Officers of tho Railway Department iiuthorisine the holder to travel from any station to any station during the period of availability of tho ticket. .Where n soldier ioins a train at a iliii? station where there is ho.permit officer, tho guards have been empowered to issue the necessnfv permits. It is further pointed out for the information of returned soldiers who hayo not already drawn their four weeks' railway tickets that the Railway Department has already agreed to the proposal to defer issue until after the resumption of tho normal time-table. The four weeks' railway ticket orders will therefore be valid not merely for the two calendar mbuths from date of issue as printed on tho face-' of the orders, but will continue to be available* until one calendar month subsequently to the date of tho resumption of normal services. It is hoped that by this'metifas only soldiers who really desire and find it necessary to avail themselves immediately of the privilego will do £0, so that the Railway Department will not bo hampered by an unnecessary number of soldiers trayollinK at the present time who'could quite well arrange to defor taking out their railway tickets until tho abnormal condition? aro relieved.
