THE PANAMA CANAL
AMERICA'S TREATY WIT.U COLOMBIA. . * New York, Jnly 30. The New York "Times" correspondent at Washington states that tho Foreign Relations Committee of tho Senate has reported favourably on the Colombian. Treaty, under whioh Colombia is to receive 25 million, dollars as compensation for the acquisition by the United States of the Panama Canal terri-tory.—A'ue.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [A Treaty between the United States and Colombia was concluded in N 1914, after negotiations -which had lasted for ten years. The first article of tho Treaty embodied an expression of sincere regret by the United States that friendly relations of the two countries should have been disturbed, and the agreement proceeded to define the rights of Colombia in respect to the Panama, I'cnal zone (the territory for which was taken from Colombia, and for which compensation was claimed). The amount of comiwnsation to be paid was fixed bv tho Treaty at 25,000,000 dollars (.£5,000,000)].
