New York, August 31.

The Chicago race riots continued for four days, but the authorities gained control when the military were called out. An area of eight square miles, occupied chiefly by negro families, was cut off from the rest of the city, and'ho food or other supplies were allowed to reach the negro section by the white rioters. As it was feared that many children might die of privation 'unless food reached them, the authorities organised u-lief. Many negro dwellings were burned by tho rioters, and some jiegroes were shot and their bodies burned in the streets.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

New York, August 1. With more than three thousand t 'oops which are now patrolling Chicago and a like number in reserve, order is being gradually restored. Nevertheless the disorders, which resulted in thirty-two deaths and live hundred wounded, etill smoulder. To-day one iiegro was killed and six wero seriously injured. Thirtyseven, fires were reported during tho day, all of which occurred in the negroes' homes.
