THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Glencoe.)
The Blenheim-owned Kebekah and Iraaribbon arrived in Wellington yesterday, and.will be shipped south by the Maori la-night. So far there is no word as to who will ride Kebekah in the Cup, but there is a rumour going the rounds that It. Tapp will have the mount. Whilst everyone would like to see Sasanoi, Spanner and Co. have a victorious trip to Eandwiek and Flemington, there is general regret in sporting circles at tho absence of such a lot of good .horses from tho principal spring meetings in the Dominion. The Chamwon Plato at Treutham and tho Stead Gold Cup at lliccartou arc two races that would have been more interesting had .the Napier horses remained in the Dominion. A Melbourne paper reports that an oiler of 1000 guineas was refused for Sir Prim just before the start of the Grand National Steeples at Flemington. Neither C. Jaokson nor It. Barlow will he at Kiccarton, and their horses, Polthoguo and Paraoa; have gone south in cnargoof othor trainers. At No«- Plymouth Decside has been qualified for hunters' races, and he will contest the jumping events at the Hunt Club meeting at Waverley this month. The Wanganui Jockey Club paid away «£'BSS9 ss. 6d. in Government taxes during tho year ending June 30. Tho club also gave in donations ,£2300 to patriotic funds, ,£250 to hunt clubs, and £25 to the Agricultural Association. Tho sum of <&0,260 was paid away in stake money. J. he net profit for the year Vas £im 2s ; > sd. _ There are thirty-five imported horses in the Caulfield Cup and thirty-six in the Mclbourno Cup. The aire with most representatives in tho Melbourne Cup is Comedy King, with seventeen of his progeny. At a sale in Melbourne of horses owned hy Mr. P. S. Mitchell a three-quarter yearling brother to that good horse Trafalgar was purchased by I. Foulsham t°r 51fl guineas. The youngster is by Wallace (sire of Trafalgar) from Coolamatoug, by Perambulator (imp.)—(iraud Canary (dam of Trafalgar). The manner in which Mr. J. Lemon became possessed of that brilliant racehorse Eebus is not generally known. When a three-year-old, the KadiumCjuibble horse was under offer to his present trainer, 'L. Murray, on the folowing terms :-Ji2so cash, .£IOO ou'Kof his first wm, and an extra .£SO if the liorso won a prize of the value of A'lOflO. Uuioreseen circumstances prevented Murray from taking tho horso himself but he related tho circumstances to Mr. J. lemon, who Hook the Horse on terms without, seeing him. He left Eebus with Murray, a course he has no reason to regret, seeing that he has won u Sydney Cup, Epsom Handicap, and Villiers stakes.
A statement lias been -ming tno rounds that tho Wanganui Jockey Club at its annual meeting had reappointed Mr. C. O Connor as starter and Mr. 11. B. L\£k as judge, but as a mutter of fact no such reappointments havo been mn.de. bo far the committee have not yet met, but vi 1 meet this week, when a starter, a handicapper, and a judge will bo appointed.
At the annual meeting of tie Hawke's B. a y Jockey Club, held on Friday last, Mr. h. J. Watt was elected a life member ot the club. This thoughtful act was the suggestion of Mr. J, S. M'Leod, who told the meeting what a good friend financially Mr. Watt had been to the club in its lean years.
