Sixth -Marist d'horndon) (3) defeated Institute A (2) (Cu'dby and Knight scored for Marist . Seventh —Marist Thorndon) (2) defeated Wadestown (0). In the final for this championship Marist (Newtown) drew with St. Anne's, one goal each, after a very oven game. This match will now-have to be replayed. BROWN SHIELD CONTEST CANTERBURY DEFEAT OTAGO. • By Ae«ociation. Christchurch, August 2. The second match of the season for the Brown Shield was played hero to-day between Canterbury, the holders, aud 'Otago, before a largo crowd. Otago won the toss, and had the advantage of a bright sun. Dowker kicked off to Norman, who immediately wenv- through the centre. M'Evory beat Spruer for the ball, and got his forwards in motion. Flood mis-kicked, and Brundell missed a chance by shooting. A goal-kick enabled Canterbury to get down, and Dickel conceded a corner. Frickleton placed the ball well, aud Dowker headed into goal, the leather striking the' upright and goin" to Spencer, who oponed tho score. Fast midneld play followed from the kick out until a combined movement brought the' Otago forwards within shooting distance but Mitchell cleared a. difficult nositiom Canterbury returned to tho attack, and Fornian and Woods became associated in a good passing movement, which the former terminated by a fine contra to Dowker, who scored from close in Play beranie exciting, the rushes of' the southern forwards threatening dangor but Mitchell was very safe, and . repelled tho attacks. Fine passing «imou» the Canterbury forwards took play to the Otago goal, and Norman, finding an opening, shot hard and true, giving Anderson no chance.. Otago attacked strongly from tho kick out, and Swift cleared a fast ground shot with difficulty A corner to Otago was cleared, and iilav was rushed down field. Dowker secured; and put Canterbury further ahead. Immediately afterwards Stevens broke away, and scored for Otago. At half-time the scores were: Canterbury, 4 Otaeo 1. In tho second half the oponing exchanges were in favour of Otago, and Newell robbed Campbell as he was about to shoot. Spencer and Frickleton took up the running,.and the iorraer lncrcnnthe score with a fast shot .Play in midfield followed for a while, but Canterbury maintained their advantage until the call of - time when the score stood: Canterbury. 5; Otago, 1.
