REV. MR. CHAPMAN AND THE MASTER TAILORS
Sir,—l am interested in the controversy between the Kev. Mr. Chapman and the master tailors. Letters appearing over tho signature of Mr. Milligan and Mr. Morrison seem to convey the idea that mv statement made before the Court of Arbitration was not true. Needless to saw I cannot take that, even from a master tailor. With your permission I shall repeat the statements. (1) That the incrcaso which the journeymen tailors received as the result of the last award amounted to about 2s. (id. on a suit of clothes. (2) That when this award came into operation (in February, 1918) sac suits were being made for about ,£6 10s. (3) Tho same class of suit is now costing the public from X 8 10s. upwards. I submit that the above is correct, and if tho Kev. Mr. Chapman has any conscientious scruples about betting on certainties I should like to nssiiro Mr.Milligan that.l have none, so far as master tailors nre concerned. If Mr. Milligan will issuo his challenge to mo to prove (lie above I shall have very great pleasure in accepting. The only point is that I shall not requiro a cleric suit, an ordinary sac will do me.—l am, etc., M..J. KEARDON. * Wellington, August 2, 1919. *
