-4 . MISHAP IN NGAHAURANGA 'GORGE
A MAN INJURED
_ A remarkable, escape from serious injury was the experience of the occupants of a service motor-car in the Ngahauranga Gorge at about 3.30 yesterday afternoon, when a collision with a motor lorry occurred. Althougl the impact was sudden and sharp, only oiie man was injured, and he was travelling in the motor lorry. I Shortly after i p.m. the Central Police. Station was advised of an accident in the, Gorge, and a police van, in charge of Acting-Senior-Sergeant Wade, together with two constables, promptly proceeded to Che spot. The scene of the accident spot a few chains above the stone crushing (marry on the .Gorge Bond,' and from the particulars obtained iby a Dominion reporter on the scene it appeal's that the cars collided on a, bend in the road. Ths lorry is owned by Moore Bros., of Johneonville. and was proceeding up the Gorge, while the service enr was bound to the city from Wanganui, in charge of the owner, Mr. Jamas Hodson, ,of Wanganui. t . . According to the statement of Mr. Hodeon, he was proceeding cautiously down the Gorge Hoad, t liich' was in a very slippery state, conveying seven passengers to Wellington, and in turning the rather sharp bend above the stone quarry ho Was suddenly confronted with the motor lorry. He promptly stopped his car dead, but the lorry came on, and struck his car in the front on the offside. The impact was somewhat severe, and although the passengers did not suffer any injury beyond a shaking, a man named Schultz, who was sitting alongside the driver of the lorry, was thrown heavily to the ground, striking the wind-screen ns he fell. Tho ladiator of the car—a new 60-h.p. machine—was' smashed, the engine damaged, ,ind the off light and mudguard .and also the springs, were damaged considerably. The motor lorry proceeded round tho corner, and then stopped, and later when ft was examined it was found that the steering asle was so damaged that the lorry could not be driven. .: Mr. Hodson immediately communicated with Wellington, and Mr. Stanton .proceeded in his car to the scene of the accident, .and removed the injured man to his home in •Johnsonville, and later returned with Constable Cox. The city police on arrival arrested.the driver of the motor lorry on a charge of drunkenness whilst in charge of a motor vehicle, and conveyed him to Wellington. ,The passengers travelling on Mr. Hodeon's car were. Mr. and..'Miss Boss, and Messrs. W. Kosselnian, C. Packham (Christchurch), A. Anscombe, E. C. lieilley. and W. J. M'Dougall. Schultz was attended at his home by Dr. Saunders, of Johnsonville, and last night was reported to be s doing well.
