HIDE AND TALLOW SALES
HIGH PK-ICES FOE. HIDES. 'The fortnightly ailes of hides and tallow were held yesterday by the verious brokers. 'Messrs. Dalgety and Co, report that they offered a Eplcndid catalogue of over 800 hides to a very full attendance of buyers. Tanners selected very few lines at ■schedule-rates, and practically the whole catalogue was submitted to auction. Hero ell lines met with very keen competition from the various exporters present, and in sympathy with the Australian market all linos showed very heavy advances on , last sale'B rates. Medium and heavy, weight ox' advanced up to 5Jd. on last sale's rates, medium light cows up to S3u., and yearlings up to 4d. per lb, All other line 3 showed lesser advances. Practically all the prices realised are from 6d. to 7d. above schedule, rates, and the firm cleared' their whole catalogue at these most satisfactory prices, Again

Lovin and Co. submitted a good selection of hides to a full bench of tanners and exporters. Competition w»fi exceedingly keen and buyers operated very freely for all lots not selected by tanners, consequently the whole of the offer ings wero quitted. Super and medium cow sold at from 6d. to 7d., a-nd best ox at from sd. to 6d. per lb. above tho Gov. crnmcut schedule prices, -whilst inferior sorts and kips changed hands readily at an advance of from Id, to 3id per lb. upon last sale's rates. Shippers and local manufacturers competed freely tor tal low. The market was firm at prices about on a par with last sales rates. Messrs. Murray, Koberts and Co. _ report that their catalogue consisted inamly of light-weight hides, the owners; of heavyweight ox hides mostly preferring to hold rather than accept the low rates imposed by the -Government schedule The siue which was tho most successful ever held in Wellington, was characterised Dy the keenest bidding for all lots, at .a sharp advance on late prices. Superior cows reached'l93d.i light ox,' 20Jd.; yearlings and kips, per lb., while a few heavyweight ox hides reached up to 193 a. per lb. Messrs. Abraham and Williams report that they offered a fair catalogue of all descriptions to a full bench of buyers, who competed very keenly fo- everything offered. As the Board of -Trade has.not yet revised ita.schedule of nrices for calfskins, the Wellington brokers are holding these from sale.
