Mr. 'William Roy M'Kean, banister ai law, has been appointed a. stipendiary magistrate. He will be stationed tit New Plymouth.
Mr. W. G. de Gruchy was u passenger on the Port Nicholson, which arrived at Auckland from New York yesterday. Mr. de Gruchy has come to New Zealand as assistant manager of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line's head office at Wellington.- He is accompanied by his wife and family, ana is expected to reach Wellington early next week.
On his retirement from Hie Department after 42 years' continuous service, the officers of the Lands and Survey Department; made a presentation of a Morris chair and >irtist's requisites to Mr. A. L. Haylock in order to .show the esteem in which , ho, has been held by all. The presentation was made. by, Mr. T. N. Urodrick, TJnder-Seeretary, who referred to Mr. Hayloek's splendid service and to his ability as one of the Department's best officers. Mr. Haylock joined Hie Department in Timaru in 1877, under the late Mr. W. C. Wright, when the-big land boom was at its height in that district. He was transferred to ChristcJnuch in it*!, sun-ing under -Mr. .1. If,. Baker, then .Commissioner of Crown Lauds. For"sonw , timo : he was in tlio office of the Receiver of Land Revenue, the late Mr. J. Williams. In 1891 Mr. Haylock was transferred to the head office, where he remained up to tins date. During ■'the long time spent , in the Department Mr. Haylock had, by his kindly disposition and niaiiy sterling qualities, endeared himself to all those with whom he came in contact. Mr. Hugo Wertheim, the well-known piano and sewing-machine manufacturer, died at South Yarra on July 11, in his Mtli year. He came to Australia in 1872. His younsjer son, Mr. Hupert Wertheim, served with the A.I.P. in I ranee with distinction. Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Duigan, I) S 0., who has been on an official visit to Wellington, will leave on his return to Auckland to-day. The funeral of the late Mr. William Campbell, ex-Chief Detective, took plauo on Tuesday. Solemn Kequiem Mass was celebrated by the .licv. Father lumbell, h'.M., at St. Francis's Church, Island Bay in the presence of a crowded congregation. The chief mourners were three sons of the deceased-Messrs. Lric, ttordoii, and Austin Canvpbcll-who were accompanied 'By four of deceased s daugh-ters-Misses Eveline, Kathleen, Aureen, iind Constance Campbell. Mr J O'Donovan (Commissioner of Ponce), Gliiei-De-tective Boddam, Constable Kedican (Island Bay),' and several other members of tho Police Force were also present. Before tho close of the Mass; the Eov. Father Kimbell delivered n brief address, referring in terms of high praise to the deceased's excellent character, both as an officer and a private citir.en. The remains were interred in the Karon cemetery, tHe Eev. Father Kimbell officiating at the graveside. Mr. Len Barnes, the popular Wellington baritone, has been presented with a Eold-mounted fountain pen by the Charfey'e Aunt Club, on the eve of his departure for America. Mr. Barnes is to leave for San Francisco by the Aloana on her next trip. Mr. Vincent Ward (son of Sir Joseph Ward) and Mr. H. 0. Brown (Sir Joseph s private secretary) will leave for Auckland by the Pateena to-day for tlio purposo of meeting Sir Joseph and Lady Ward, who are returning from England via Canada by the Niagara rarly next week. Mr. Cecil Hawken has been appointed a member of the Licensing Committee of Hawera, and Mr. C. F. Baker a member of tho Licensing Committee of PalnaMγ. J. W. Barker, J.P., has been appointed a coroner.
