FRENCH ASSISTANT TEACHERS IN ENGLAND. ■ Arrangements are being made to, encourage young French secondary school masUrs mid mistresses to come for a ucriod of service in English secondary schools, states' the "MoTning Post." a convention lias recently been signed between the English, Board of Education and the French Alinistei of Educatiou by which these young French teachers recommended by their Ministry may be 'attached tor a year to secondary schools' Lu England. In suitable cases the Board of Education will make a grant towards meeting the expense involved. The grants, as a rule, will be „£35 for each assistant, or half the cost of maintenance where the total does not exceed .270. These assistant masters or . mistresses are, in return for their services, to receive at the schools to which they aro appointed full board and lodging free of rtiargc, or, iu lieu thereof, a maintenr.uce allowance to cover the cost of board wid lodging. The minimum allowance that can be made for the full period of service is -C7O, and the amount will vary from this sum to XBS, according to local conditions. The school must also' see that satisfactory provision is made for the maintenance of the assistant during tho school holidays. As a rule, these French teachers will be employed to conduct small "conversational "groups" consisting of .pupils who have acquired such proficiency and facility in tho foreign language as to enable them to take an active share in tho conversation. This may be supple : juented. if desired, by exercises in reading, dictation, and oral composition. While they will rank as equals in status of the regular teaching staff, assistants may not 1 be required to undertake regiilar'elass instruction, nor be made, responsible for discipline or for any formal supervision of pupils.
