ACCOUNTANT STUDENTS' SOCIETY

'PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION.

At last night's meeting of the Wellington Accountant Students' Society a competition for a trophy donated by Mr. E. W. Hiiut. (president) was decided. Each competitor was required to read an essay written by himself on a subject embraced, by the examinations of the Society of Accountants and to answer qucsli-.uis upon it, and afterwards to deliver an impromptu 6peech on a subject chosen by tho committee. The members who entered for the competition and tho subjects of their essays were: Mr. Oordo'n Berry, "Directors of Limited Liability Companies"; Mr. E. K. Cameron, "Depreciation"; Mr. 11. C. Green, "Consignments and Consignment Accounts ; Mr. H. Li Halliday, "Reserves'; Mr. A. ,1. M'Lcimati, "Capacity and Authority pf Parties to Bills of Exchange. ,1 ho subject chosen for the impromptu speech was: "You aro to assume that as the auditor of a limited company recently formed to acquire and carry on a large and prosperous business of general merchants, you have been requested to addrees tho Board of Directors setting out a general system of internal,check which you suggest should be followed to provide against fraud." Messrs. 11. H. Cornish. M.A.. and J. L. Grilliu, 8.C0m., acted as judges, and awarded first place to Mr. dordoii Berry.

In order lo fuiihcr restrict the passenger trallS* on the railways, it has been arranged that permits must be obtained. Officers will receive applications for permits at Lnmbtoii and Thorudon stations and at the Central Booking Ofiice, Willis Street, between !> a.m. and 5 p.m. On Siilurdavs, however, the Central Booking Office will close at 1.30 p.m. An official announcement appears in this issue.
