Tlio death is announced of Mrs. D.unc;m Al'Lennnn, of Papakura, Auckland, iit tho ago of S7 years. Mrs. M'Lennan was ouo of tlio first settlers in that district; in fact, s'ho and her husband enjoyed file distinction of being the first white people to bo located on land there.. Mrs. Jl'Leiinan arrived in Auckland ivilli her parents by tho ship Westminster as far back as 1843. She was .married' at the age of 1G to Mr. Duncan M'Lomian. On behalf of the Navy League Ladies' Auxiliary, Mrs. Lever niado and raffled a rug bust year, for which rug a sum of about .MO was received. This money was expended upon the provision of comforts for the men of tho Dover Patrol,but owing to tho epidemic of influenza theso comforts, about ten cases in.all, were not dispatched until some time in December. Butter, cake, sweets, Christinas puddings, tea, etc., were included among them, most of tho goods as will be seen being those which were very, difficult to obtain in England at that time. Yesterday morning Mrs. Lever received a letter from the captain of tho Dover Patrol,and several others from the commanders of tho drifters which formed part of tho Patrol, each letter containing grateful thanks for the comforts which had arrived about Juno 6. 'In the courfo of his letter the captain of the. Patrol mentioned the fact that all the goods arrived iu excellent condition, a statement that was endorsed by the various other writers. The greatest appreciation was expressed by one and all of tlio kind thought and action of those ladies living in so far-off a country who had shown so much consideration for the welfare of men who were doing ' their best for tho Euipjre in the Northern seas. ' Sirs. Lever paid a tribute to the excellence of the packing of tho goods, which wa3 done by the staff of. the Wnirarapa Farmers' Co-operative. Association. Miss Kathleen Shackleton, sister of Sir Ernest Shackleton, is said to be tho first woman to volunteer as a member of tho Belief Force for Northern Russia. In reference to the shortage of domestic helpers in New Zealand. Sirs.
