PETONE COURT
CASE OF ASSAULT. At the Petone Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Messrs. It,. W. Short and J. Piper, .I.P.'s, the Petone Borough Council proceeded against William Evans on. a charge of having assaulted W. B. Gough, the Borough Inspector, on July 22. The defendant was represented by Mr. I). 1!. Richmond, and Mr. B. C. Kirk appeared for the Petone Borough Council. W. B. Gough, in the facts of the case, said that ho was walking along a right-of-way leading to the borough pound, when defendant struck him and knocked him down. He endeavoured to get up, but wos again knocked down by the defendant. When eventually he had regained his feet he was again struck in tho face several times. Evidence as to the severity of the injuries received by Cough was given by Dr. Harding, who stated that Mr. Gough would be unable to resume work for another week. Defendant, said that, he struck Gough only in self-defence. Ho did not strike him while he was down. Tho Justices, however, thought differently, and said that while there might hnvo b'eon some slight provocation for the offence, public servants must bo protected. The accused was fined £7, half of tho amount to bo paid to Mr. Gough.
