LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL-

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday ' ovening. There were present the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth), and Councillors Cotton, Hobbs, West, Hardy, Guinness, Mitchell, Mcldrum, and Knight. A letter was received from the AuditorGeneral stating that he had no authority to supply the council with the information desired in connection with Hospital charges. The Minister of Public Health wrote on the same matter, and advised the council |hat the town clerk's letter in reference to the Hospital Board's refusal to furnish information desired would receive attention. A letter was received from the Minister of Railways stating that the council's request for the removal of the embargo against running trams on the Hutt Road would be referred to Cabinet for consideration. A complaint was received from Mr. W. Neazor regarding the stato of the footpaths in Tawa and Victoria Streets, surrounding his property. It was decided to inform the writer that no special work could be carried out in tho meantime. The Wellington town clerk wrote stating that tho estimated expenditure on the Hutt Road for 1918 was .£3OOO, but the actual expenditure had been £4251. It was estimated that tho expenditure for tho present year would be in the neighbourhood of JMfIOO. The contribution from the Lower Hutt Council would now bo £7H, and the estimates for the current year would have to bo Tevised. Some discussion followed as to the reasons for the increased expenditure, and it was decided to write to the City Council asking for details of expenditure, and also the reason for tho increase over the estimated amount. It was decided that the Mayor and Councillor A. Hobbs be appointed to represent the council at the forthcoming meeting in Wellington to discuss tho question of upkeep and improvement of main arterial roads. The engineer's report stated that the usual repair wort had been carried out. Somo portions of the Hutt Road were in a very bad'stato and in urgent need of j repair. The remainder of the machm-j ery for the water supply pumping plant i hiul come to hand. Tho amount of gas purchased from the Petone Borough fnr the month of-May was 2,017,000 cubic feet. This amount was consumed as follows:—Domestic purposes, 1,651,000 cubic feet; power purposes, 124,800 cubic feet; a,nd street lighting, 82,000 cubic feet. The report was adopted.
