ANCIENT TREASURE

The search which the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland lias been conducting lor some time- on Trarain Law, an isolated hill which forms part of Mr. A. J. Balfour's Whittinghiiine Estate, has resulted in remarkable archaeological discoveries (slates tho London ''Observer"). The excavators have come upon a pit two feet deep and two feet wide, filled with fragments of metal vessels. Theso relics, although in a broken condition, form a rich collection of fourth century silver plate. Two tiny coins gave tho date. One was struck by Valens, who was Emperor of tho East from 3G4 to UTS, and tho other by one of his successors, probably Gralian or Honrius. Tho vessels have decoration* of striking beauty. On the surface of one embossed cup ore the figures of Adam mid Evo standing by a fruit-laden tree, with a serpent twined round' its trunk.,. Tho same cup Jwre a representation of tho Magi, and on another was dopict'ed'tho miraculous draught of fishes. Mora Ihan one example of the Chiroh monogram was noted among tho inscriptions.

(The cable news in thin Issue accredited to the Loudon "Times" has appeared in that journal, but only where expressly stated is such news the editorial opinloa of tho "Times.")
