Ribot, interviewed, stated that th( Pone, at the beginning of August, 1917, submitted proposals as a basis of overtures to Germany, which Britain and France declined, Britain declaring that the proposals did not contain sufficient guarantees regarding Belgium. The Vatican telegraphed to Germany this reply, and suggested tho commencemenl of conversations regarding tho' matter. Britain put an end to tho movement immediately. Herr Erzberger's statement was a distortion of (he truth. M. R-ibot added that ho advised Britain not to ah' low herself to bs drawn into such con-versations.—Aus.-N.Z, Cable Assn.
