PRICE OF POTATOES
SHORTAGE REPORTED IN THE SOUTH. i Messrs. Ireland and Co., of Oamaru, writing to u Wellington merchant u few days ago about tho {iotato market, said they would be surprised if tho market came back. They felt quite certain that the potatoes (;o bring about such a result) were not in the South Island to meet requirements until the new crop arrived. Good Oamaru potatoes are quoted at d£!) os. f.0.b., which makes them Jell to Jill ss. in Wellington, according to quality—a stiff price for this time of the year. With the price so high exportation to Australia is, "it is understood, still being allowed under permit. Whether such should bo the case is a matter for the Board of Trade. Local merchants hold the view tfiat no potatoes should be allowed to be exported when the f.o.b. price tops .£9 per ton, as it is deliberately encouraging high prices for an every-day food commodity the public cannot do without.
