PHONING WHILE FLYING

REMARKABLE DEVELOPMENT IN WIRELESS. The use of wireless telephony has now been definitely adopted as a means of ground ■ to air 'communication on tho London-Paris aerial route. An important night, test was recently carried out during tho flight of a Handley Pago from Kenley to Paris. Communication was opened as soon as tho Handley Page had obtained height, and; after speaking: to the ground station, tho receiver was turned in and speech was very clearly heard from'.TCenley. Tho oilicel- conduetinf the test emphasises in his report .speech quality and strength, and states that ,ho easily recognised tho voice as that of an officer known to him. To a distance cf about 35 miles the strength of signals was so great that speech, from the machine could be clearly hoard at Kenley with the receiver laid on the iable. At 50 miles it was still -distinct and constant, and was heard till tho aeroplane was crossing tho Channel and was in touch with Marquise, tho first ground station on the French side." On '.he return journey conversation between the inachino ami Marquise was again picked up at Kenley, and the latter station itself was in communication with the machine 30 minutes before it landed.

One of the most recent developments is the production of an aeroplauo set, wiiich can be converted within a few moments for transmission of either voice or Mor?e signals.
