SLEEPING SICKNESS

PETONE CASES UNDER REVIEW.

Some little discussion over the two recent cases of alleged, sleeping sickness in Petone took place at the meeting ot' the Petone Borough Council last night. At tho last meeting of the council a complaint had been made stilting that two patients, a man and a child, who were Ijoth reported to be suffering from sleeping sickness, had been discharged from the Wellington Hospital before they were convalescent, and a .lay or so Inter. it had been found necessary to readmit 1 the two patients to the Hospital. The Mayor (Mr. M'Ewan) had made inquiries from the doctors and Hospital staff and had been informed ihat everything possible had been done for tlie two patients concorncd. Councillor Anderson said that lie had a written statement from tho father of the child patient, stating that Dr. Hardwick Smith had ordered the child's removal to the Hospital after it hacl already :been discharged. With reference to the other case, the Hospital authorities had informed the wife of the man that her husband was. quite convalescent and quite fit for discharge from the Hospital. However, on arrival at the Hospital the wife had discovered that her husband was far from well, and it had been found, necessary to bring the man out to Petone in a car. Since then the man's removal to the Hospital hacl again been ordered, but the man had refused to go. Councillor Anderson thought that a thorough infinity into 'the matter should he made. The 'Petone Council paid a large sum to the Hospital rates each year, and good treatment at least was expected in return. Councillor Churcliowm also thought that an inquiry should lx> held. It was finally resolved. that the Mayor make further exhaustive inquiries into the mo tier and report at next meeting.
