NOTES FROM VARIOUS x CENTRES (From Our Special Correspondents,). WAIRARAPA As a result of the train restrictions the price of onions ami other produce used for household purposes has increased materially in Mnsterton. A branch of the Women's Efficiency Leaguo lias ])een formed in Mnsterton. Mm. J. Macfinc lias been elected president, Mrs. Collie vice-president, and Miss Nora Mooro secretary. A comlhitteo has been formed as follows;—Tho Mayoress (Mrs. W. 11. Jackson), Mesdames L. Thompson, H. H. Peetham, P. R. Cook, H. T. Wood, Archer Ilosking, T. A. Wateon, tho Misses Yallancc, Wnrdell, and Morrison. At the recent meeting of tho Masterton Chamber of Commerce the general opinion expressed was that, provided nothing unforeseen occurred, the coal shortage would soon bo overcome. Mr. J. C. Cooper, Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, complained that there was too much control to allow of individual effort becoming a factor in increasing the coal supply. On Friday evening, prior to their departure for EkotaUuna and Christchurch respectively, Messrs. .11. E. Moore aud D. M. M'lntosh wore each presented with a gift by Mr. Gumming, postmaster, on behalf of their colleagues 011 the local postal staffs. There are fifty-ono patients in tho Masterton Hospital at present. The final in tho series of matches to decide the winner of the net aggregate and president's challegnc trophy was played on the Masterton golf links on Saturday. Tho best cards handed in were as follow: —P. W. Pointon, 84, handicap 18, net 65; E. Perry, 81—G—75; J. G. Bee, 31-99-81. Mr. P,ee wins tho competition with four points. Mr. A. P. Whatman has offered to the Government ten sections, each with an area of a quarter of an acre, and fronting the Upper Plain Road, 011 which to erect homes for returned soldiers. Mr. Whatman stipulates that the houses must bo of a fair cjass. All Mnsterton children below school age who did not attend the previous two parties given as part of the Peace celebrations, were on Saturday evening entertained in the Municipal Hall uuder the supervision of a ladies' committee, presided over by tho Mayoress (Mi's. W. H." Jackson: Many -unique fancy costumes were worn, and each child thoroughly enjoyed itself. Refreshments wero provided, and at the conclusion of the ovening bags of sweets were distributed anion# the children. Altogether over 3000 children have been entertained at the three parties that have been held to celebrate the signing of peace. Featherston successfully defended tho Prasnel! Shield against a, Carterton team of miniature rifle range marksmen _ on Friday night, scoring 955 points against their opponents' 975; 10 men aside.
