A WIN FOR THE VISITORS . Wellington, the holders of the shield, met Manawatu on the liasiu Hcserve on Saturday before a fairly large attendance. The early stages of llie game were fairly cien, and although Maimwatu attacked with plenty of vim, the Wellington backs were able to stem,the attack, and after defending for about fifteen minutes. Wellington became dangerous, and a lively sortie on the part of the local forwards ended inVJhampncss .scoring.Alio:- a spell of- even play, Wellington resumed the attack, but some good work bv the forward division was spoiled by l:tu> solid defence of the Manawatu eleven. Afh.-i' an interval caused by a temporary injury to a. Manawatu player, Mnnnwalu became dangerous; but Wellington saved 'the situation. At length Manawatu forced the pace, and Hunter (Wellington's goalkeeper) went out to stop a shot. The ball was sent out, but Tait secured quickly, and shot into nil empty goal.-"', Wellington, 1; Mnnnwatu, 1. A pencil of give-and-take play ended in Smith shooting without effect. Manawatu replied, and what looked to bo a certain goal was stopped by Hunter lcickintt behind. This appeared lo put more vim ii.lo'Wellington, but Smith .spoiled the effort by wailing olVside for the shot. After several good attempts by Manawatu Wellington took the offensive, but several good shots failed to iind the goal. At .length Manawnlu made good efforts, and finally Fift found the goal.
