THE PRICE OF GAS
BOARD OP TRADE'S INQUIRY.
,The Board of- Trade, whioh has inquired regarding the price of gas in Wellington, 6tates that it. has investigated the value of the company' 6 residuals, with the idea of ascertaining whether • it was possible' to obviate a rise in the price of ' gas to consumers by increasing the price of residuals! The boardT found that the scheme was Dot feasible. The Gas Company had not sought the sanction of the Board of Trade before it gave notice of intention to raiso the price. /There is no' legislative enactment, War Regulation, or Order-in-Council requiring it to do so. STt is not bound to, obtain the permission of the board to raiso iW price foi gas. The board's functions are defined under the Cost of Living Act, 1915, ,and by that Act it is empowered to inquire into, and report upon,..any complaint that the price of any class of goods is unnecessarily high. —The board considered that the Wellington Gas Company had not ma'de sufficient provision in the past for depreciation. The coal oontract of the company, expiring in 1917, was for 18s. to 21s. £d. per ton at Miramar Wharf; after that the company, expected • to pay an average of. 28s. 3d. per ton for State coal. The price of coal to the company had in-creases-from 18s. 9d. per ton in 191G to BOs. per ton in 1918. The increase in the price of gaa from ss. sd. to 6s. Bd.per 1000 cubic feet (net), was justified to the board by the following increased charges at'per IDOO feet: Price of coal, UJd.i inoreased wages, 3}d.; proper allowance for depreciation, 5Jd.; total, Is. Bfd. The board states that if anyone brings complaint before it in. writing, stating prima facie jeasons why it is considered that the price of gas is too high, then the board under the provisions of the Act will investigate such complaint and will'report upon it in duo course, and the report will be published. If tiie complaint is substantiated, then remedial eteps. will be taken by the proper authorities. yS
