Gray,' secretary to the Ministerial Kepahiution Board, as follows:—"Wellington papers liavo a Press Association message stating that a ease uf hardship has arisen owing to a soldier's widow desiring 10 return to t)i{jland and being unable to pay the £w lax imposed by the Imperial Government on women entering the British isles. This statement is not Understood, .bo far as the Government knows no such tax i= payable; nobody has ever heard of it before, and the suggestion appears lo be a liuaxi As a matter of- fact, the latest advice received from the High Commissioner in that the Imperial Ministry ot Shipping had agreed in certain epecwed cases ot luml.-shin to transport soldiers' widows desiring to return from New Zealand to England at troop rates." The chairman (Mr. A. AV. Jamieson) said the board had received its information from a reliable source, and he did mil. think that they were the victims of a hoax.
