NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES (From Our Own Correspondents.) WAJRARAPA A football match played in Mnslorton yesterday in aid of the Fallen Soldiers and Cnmeron Memorial Park Fund resulted in a team representing the Waingnwa Freezing Works defeating the Amateur Athletics by 5 points to 3. During tho month ended July i>o (he local brunch of the Eepatriation Department has paid approximately r'he sum of .£26 per week to subsidiso tho wages of eighteen trainees in various trades and on farms. During the same period sums of money lmvo been granted as follow:—Threo business loans amounting to ,£9flfl 53.; furniture loans amounting to ,£250 55.; Joans for trade tools amounting to ,£65 ss. 10d. Three grants to men'awaiting employment were made, and twelve men were placed in positions. With tho addition of ?.n item for general, expenses tho loans mentioned above •make a total expenditure for the month of £1278 6s. 3d. At Kopuaranga on Tnesday evening a meeting was held to consider the advisableuess of forming a company to erect a cheeso factory. After Mr. Tait had delivered an address on the best scheme for them to follow, most of those present intimated their intention of taking up shares. Tho meeting was adjourned to enable a canvass to be made of the districts.
Messrs. A. W. Hogg and T.. Moss, members, and Mr. G. L. Stewart, secretary, of tho Education Board, held an inquiry on Wednesday into the burning of Te Ore Ore School. Tho evidence of the headmistress and school children was ■heard, but nothing was disclosed which would elucidate the mystery of the origin of tho fire. It was urged by several residents present that n-ebmlding in concreto should commence immediately.
A case of considerable interest to local ratepayers and borough councillors again came up for hearing at tho Court 'yesterday, when, tho Mmsterton Borough Council (Mr. Noble) proceeded against tho Railway Department (Mr. Burridge) for damages to gas retorts, alleged to have been done during transit from Auckland. Tho case had been adjourned from a previous sitting to enable evidence to be taken at Auckland. Mr. Free, S.M., in delivering judgment for defendants, with costs according to scale, said that there was no evidence to contradict the statement of tjie railway authorities that the .retorts were badly cracked when they were loaded at Auckland, and ho must accept and had considered this statement in delivering his judgment, ns lie could not sec how the Railway Department could bo held responsible if the damage had been done prior to loading. The annual reunion of the Mastertoh Fire Brigade and a welcome liomo to returned members was held at the Fire Brigade Station last ni,?lit, and was a most successful function. Jenkins, replied to by the Greytown mid Featherstoil .representatives j "Masterton Fire Brigade," Mr. R. ft. BurrTdge, replied to by Supt. Freeman and Mr. J. Harder; Old Boys and Hon. Members," ex-Captain W. Dixon. Songs and musical items interspersed the toasts. Tho brigade shield was presented to Fireman H. Braggins. Honours were, presented as follow:—Gold bar, to B. Braggins; silver bar, to T. Jenkins; bars, to A. H. Pickering, J. Butcher, E. Freeman, L. Layers, W. Clark, AV. Land; medals, to G. Bnfr, J. M'lCenzie; certificates, to J. Harder, J. Connor, 11. Calclwell, B. Chapman, W. AVood. J. Clarke, C. Clark.
Last night in tho Mnstcrton Opera House tho children of the Lansdowno School •again performed "Tho Mystic Mirror." The proceeds (about j>so) are to be distributed among the two local bands. Prior to the performance tho combined bands paraded the streets and attracted an audience which filled the theatre to its utmost capacity. MANAWATU
Very few electors exercised their franohise at the by-election in Pnhuerston North this week to fill the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation, of Mr. T. R. Hodder. Out of 5000 voters on the list, only. 910 went to the poll. Following are tho results:— M. A. Elliot (elected), 681; G. Allman, 115; F. Rolfe, 104; informal, 10.
At a meeting of the Manawatu Hockey Association this week a letter was received from the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association stating that Feilding Ladies' Hockey Association had been granted affiliation, and also that the annual tournament had been allocated to Christchurch. The Canterbury Hockey Association wrote intimating that it would play a match hero oi» August 13 if Wellington defeated Man>.watu in the Shield match on Saturday next. Should Manawatu win, Canterbury would prefer to play on August 9 for the Shield. It was resolved to ask the Rugby Union to assist this association in its endeavour to make this game a euccess, by arranging its fixtures to meet. Tho Manawiitu Hunt Club will hold its final hunt of the Reason at Almaflale on Saturday, the "throw-oft" ,, being at Almadale at 2 p.m., and tho "kill' - at Mr. Hugh BurrelJ's. Tho committee of tho Campbell Street School, Palmerston North, has decided to erect an honours board in memory of old boys of the school who have served in the war, and is at present compiling tho necessary roll.
The Church of England Schoolroom nt Shannon, which bus just been built, has now been formally opened. At the ceremony, which was performed by Archdeacon Johnson, of Wellington, the following contributed items to tho entertainment programme:—Mr. ond Mrs. Bishop (song), Miss Dagg (song), Mrs. Gibson (song), Afiss Aim (song), Mr. Lamont (recitation), and Master Merwood (song). Mrs. Gibson presided at the organ.
Prior to leaving for Maraekakaho, Hawke's Bay, wheis he has accepted a call, the Rev. Brodin, Presbyterian minister at Foxton, was entertained by members of his congregation aiid presented with a cheque for a substantial sum.
A six-ropmert house in Johnson Street, Foxton, owned by Mr. F. S. Easton and occupied 'by Mr. D. M'Cauley, was destroyed by lire, overnight this week. The inmates escaped, in their night, attire. An unoccupied dwelling in Main Street, Foxton, was also totally destroyed by firo tliis week, th'o causo of tho'outbreak being ii mystery. Tlu building, which was owned by the estate uf the lato Mrs. j>. Collins, was probably the oldest in Folon.
At tho last meeting of the Biinnytliorpe branch of the Farmers' Union a remit was passed urging the Government that in view of the recent fatal accident and tho Coroner's rider, the Railway Department be requested to erect some form oi alarm at the Bunnythorpo crossing, it was also decided to recommend the Government that the traffic handled at the Buiinythorpo station warranted the erection of n goods shod. Mr. and Mrs. G. Malmo, who have resided at Bnnnytliorpc for 14 years, were entertained recently by BunnythorpD settlors on the eve of their doparturo for Masteiion, where they are taking up tlioir residence.
Mr. Nicholls, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Otaki, has received notice of bis transfer to Opunake. Mr. J. R. Mnlcolm, of Westport, will fill the vacancy at Otaki. ■
