WESTPORT HARBOUR BOARD
FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES,
By Telegraph-Press Association. Westport, July 22. Through tho operation of clauses 108 and 109 of the Finance Act of 1915, the Westport Harbour Board, which used to be ono of the wealthiest institutions of the kiijd in the Dominion, is having financial difficulties. The board has had to pay out of its ordinary revenue the whole' of the increased charges resulting from the war in the way of higher wages, extra costs of material, and so forth, but has not got one penny of increased revenues from tho railway and tho wharves, although the profits from these wero given.by Act of Parliament as an endowment to the board, and upon its endowments the board lias raised something like «£550,000 iu loan money. The board considers that a monstrous injustice has been done to it, and it hps been trying, without avail, to get satisfaction 'from Ministers. To-day complaint was' made that neither lettors nor telegrams to the Minister for Marine on the nuestion were getting satisfactory attention, and it was resolved to send the chairman (Mr. Slee) and Mr, M'lntyre (a member of the beard) to Wellington to interview tho Cabinet and seo if tho injustice could not be removed. The Government from the source in question has made a clean lift of £30,000.
