THISTLE DEFEAT BROOKLYN. Quite nn interesting game of "soccer" was played on the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon, notwithstanding tlw wind and the inclement weather, 'the Thistle team, who are leading for tho championship with one-match .vet lo be played apart from the match played yesterday, were the contestants with Brooklyn, w|io are not very forward iu tho championship. The Brooklyn Cuu'b managed to put on the iield a, very good- team. 'Ihe Thistles wore played on to. the field by two pipers.' The Brooklyns defended the south goal, aiid the Thistles, who had the wind in their favour, kicked oil. For the first ten minutes tho play "'as without incident,, the ball moving up and down the field, and then the Thistles looked liko scoring, ..but off-sido play spoiled whatever, chance they had. I*or a time plav settled down in the Brooklyn half ol' the field, the 'ihistles .being . greatly helped by'the strong wind that was blowing. The Scottish lads had the best- of the game, and iiiado several atNupLs to get the ball into the net, but on racli occasion just missc-d their objective. The Brooklyns were awarded a free kick, but it proved to be their un-doing,-for the biilt was returned lo Hart, who kiekul an easy goal. From the kiekoli' t'lie Brooklyns iorcod tho game and missed an excellent cliaiii-o c-f'scoring. The Thistles soon recovered, awl after some lino play Colin l!cid kicked a goal. From a corner kick'the Thistles registered a third goal within a minute or two 'of their previous success. After some give and take play, in-wliich tho Brooklyn* were conspicuous, Iho spell 'elided with Thistlo three goals, Brooklyn nil. Brooklyn, wilh tho wind behind them in the second spell, began lo leake things hot for Thistle. M'Arthur and M'Kenzie were defending iu great siyle. From a goal.kick, Hansen, Thistle's right wing, made a s|llendid run on the- right wing, and from the centre 'Edwards sent in a "daisy cutter," which completely I>rut Bellamy. Edwards broke away on the left, and from his "centre Hansen mulled, and a good bit of plav came. !o nought. Reid, for Thistles, who was playing a great game, set his forwards going, and only good play 'by Bellamy saved the fitiialion. Give an<! take- play followed for some time, when. Smith, inside right for Brooklyn, broke away after beating three players. His shot, struck the crossbill'. M'Arthur was playing a great game for -Thistle, also. M'Kenzie, and their brainv work was a treat to uitoli. Galloway broke away after a great piece of work, and.beat Kgertnn .with a beautiful kick. After this Mie excitement was great amongst the feiv hundred spectators, and the game was very fast, c.cnfklQi'ing the state of th«v ground. Edwards broke, and from Ihe centre Reid misled Off-side p'a.v. spoilt a good chance for Brooklyn. Thistle were now having the best of ihe game against the w'"d, ai"l had bad luck in rot scoring. When Hie whistle sounded,-Thistle were leading by 4 to 1.
