Sir.—l do not agree with your leader In yesterday's paper re Sir James Allen S scheme for training. Your paper gen; orally takes a very broadmuided and farseeine view of things, but in this case it; certainly does not do bo. Sir James A Hon now stands in the position of Lord Roberts when years before the war ha warned and warned the British Empire to prepare, with what results we know. It is the duty of every young man in the country to undergo military training. We will all admit that there is always menace from tho East. Australia and New 'Zealand are looked upon with covetous eves and if the blow came it would lis the same old story, the ready . men would 20 and die while the others got raidv. Look at our coast defences. What would happen if a few hostile cruisers came with airships? Wellington w J buld soon be reduced to bricks and mortar. These things have got to be faced sooner or later. The world s popuIntion is fast increasing, and every nation is looking for outlets; and to settle down into the smug idea that war has ceased is only to assume the attitude ot Am Romans of old; an attitude that led to their undoing.—l am, efe,
