NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES WAIRARAPA At a meeting of Court Marquis of Norlnan'b.y," A.0.F., on Wednesday evening, Bro. W. Sunnon, C.li, presiding, it was decided to have a revaluation made of the court property. It was decided to write to the United Friendly Societies Council asking that the new igreement with tho court surgeons be proceeded with without unnecessary delay. A design for a memorial in honour of members who served in tho war was submitted to the meeting. A quantity of routino business was also transacted. Mr. John Thomas Strnwdridge, of Ahinrung, died at Carterton on Saturday night at the ago of 10 years. Deceased was tho third son. of Mr. and Mro. Thomas Strawdridgo, of Otaki, and was an employee of the Wairarapa South County Council. Tho late Mr. Strawdridge was continuing his usual employment until Wednesday last, when he was struck down with pleurisy. He leaves a widow, a daughter of Mrs. J. Warrington, of Cajterton, and a family of eight young children, the cldeat of whom is eleven. Lieutenant H. H. Pavitt, who arrived at Wellington "by the Etiahine, returned to Mastertoii on Thursday evening. MANAWATD The death occurred quite suddenly at Palmergton North last week of Mrs. Clara Louisa Pickering, wife of Mr, Arthur Pickering. Mrs. Pickering had been- to a picture theatre raid 6iiortly afterwards she was seized with illness and expired. Deceased, who leaves a grown-up family, wa3 aged 62 years. ' Recently there have been numerous cases in Palmerston North of unauthorised "joy., riders" in motor-cars on the part of irresponsible pereons, and several automobile owners have boen thus temporarily deprived, oi their cars, only to find them "eventually abandoned on the outskirts of tho town or a few miles in tho country.. The police at Palmerston kept a sharp lookout for offenders in this respect, with the result that n ganft of five "joy riders" were arraigned at tho Police Court this week, charged with tho theft of two and a half gallons of benzine, and with wilfully damaging a car, the property of James S. Fletcher, of Palmerston North. Accused; F. <j. Quayle, Alfred Watson, T. Sweenoy, W. L. Hordern, and E. Cruickshkink, all pleaded guilty. Evidence wont to show that on the evening of June 27 Mr. Fletcher missed his car from the front of tho Workingmen's Club and found it next morning in another part of the town. ,It was damaged to the extent of 255., and two and a half gallons of benzine liad been. used. It was a new car and the speedometer showed that it had been- driven nt least CO miles. 1 It transpired that the defendnnts had taken possession of the ear nnd taken part in several dances put in the country, subsequently 'retailing to Palmerston and abandoning it. ■ In indicating that in future cases of this nnturo imprisonment would be inflicted, the Bench fined four of tho accused £2 and costs, and Quaylo (who had driven' the car) .£3 and costs. The eldest sou of Mr. G. M. Sanson, of Bunnythorpe, had the misfortune to break his collarbone recently while playing football. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Palmerston North, have decided to erect a peaeo memorial building to provide accommodation, for SundaySchool and Bible'Clasa work.
