Lord Newton has been awarded .£SOOO damages against the "Daily 3in.il" for alleging, that he made heartless speeches in the House of Lords .regarding war prisoners when in charge of the Prisoners' Department. The "Daily Mail" made a series of attncks on Lord Newton for several months in 1318. The specific libel alleged that Lord Newton, in. the House of Lords, treated the suffering of- prisoners as an opportunity for self-advertisement, with iokes and eneers, adding that he joked on the trajrio suffering of the prisoners.
