Ouarterinaster-Sorgennt Michael Ryan, of Matakanui, who served with distinction in the British Army (Liverpool RcsimonO in the war, in-which he lost an arm, has lieen recommended for an nrrooinlment on the Defence Staff in New Zealand. The particulars of the incident which led to his being decorated "for conspicuous gallantry nnd devotion to dutv" arc officially given as follow:— "When acting as C.S.M. tho officer commanding two platoons in the front lino was killed, and' ho took command of (horn, passing through a heavy barnigo of shells nnd machine-gun fire to reach (hem. The enemy attacked in great strength, but by his splendid example and coolness in directing the fire under CNtrcmelv heavy hostile shelling, ho was rcsuonsible for holding up for a time tho attack, although very hard pressed both in front and nn the flank. Although wounded, he remained at his post until ordered fo withdraw, which he did ijn good order. His conduct throughout was bevond all praise."
