As the result of a visit to Feathe.rston Camp by Mr. J. A. Cowles, president of the Wairarapa Returned Soldiers' Association, the association has forwarded a chcoue for ,£5 to Chaplain White, who is to use the money at'his own discretion for the purchase of comforts for the inmates of the camp hospital. At a meeting of the Masterton County Council held on Wednesday, it was decided to pay the council's employees fnll wages for the per.ee celebration holidays. A start has been made in connection with tho makin? of I'he Fallen Soldiers and Cameron Memorial Park, and ploughing oneratinns nTe now in progress at the old showgrounds. . Last year, 1156 head of cattle. 198 cnlves, 2SOO pigs. 6715 sheen, and 1739 lambs were slaughtered at the Masterton, abattoirs. A football match was played in -Masterton yesterday between the Athletic Club and renresentatives of the taxidrivers, the former winnini by 17 points to 5. The takings at the smte (£3 2*. fxl.) are to bo devoted to the Fallen Soldiers and Cameron Memorial Park Fund. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on Wednesday evening, Mr. J. Ti. M'V. Caldwell presiding. It was decided that, owing to the illness of Mr. Lan Cameron, the proposed "Tngleside" at Mauriceville, to celebrate the chief's birthday, be postponed until August 12. On the motion of Mr. J. B. M'Kenzie. it was decided to hold n. musical nicnic in aid of the Fallen Soldiers*"and Cameron Memorial sports_ grounds, and to obtn.in the cooperation of the local bands. The report of the Finance Committee • showpd the receipts for the month to be £U 12s. Sd., and expenditure ..£'3o ss. The credit balance as per bank passbook was ,£l6B 9s. 9d. The Rev. R. B. Mosnel) has been annotated hon. local representative of the Repatriation Department at Greytown. On Wednesday evening, in the Masterton Methodist Church, a social was tendered to returned soldiers, who, prior to the war, had been associated with the church. On account of the peac? celebrations there will be no meeting of the > Claims Board of tho Wairarapa Patriotic Association on Monday. The local branch of the Repatriation Department has at present on its books the names of eight soldiers requiring employment. The children attending Te Ore Ore School, which- was destroyed by fire on Tuesday nisrht, will probably bo j accommodated at tho Lnnsdownc School j in (he meantime. J The new Mayor «!' Grrytowi: (Mr. W. A. Hntton) called a meeting of his councillors to consider financial matters. Tho meeting was held in committee. Tt is, however, understood that cliequ-es for a large amount have been drawn but cannot be presented till Hie chest is refilled. To help meet the strain, the following resolutions were passed:—''That notice be given that in view of th>; strained financial position the council give notice that ail rnte* payable will 'be ?;un\ for if nut paid within one month." Also, "That in view of tho increased caringe and cost of coal the council increase the net gas charges by twopence per 100 feet as from August 1, 1919," and "That on account of the present financial position (hey hold nil high-pressure water extensions in abeyance."
