ANGLICAN DOCTRINES

• CHARGES AGAINST A VICAR. By TolCEranh—Press Association. Dunn.din, July 17. The Court of Appeal of the Anglican Church of the province of New Zealand has delivered its judgment in the caso of the Rev. C. H. C'orsett and the Rev. C. E. Perry, vicar of St; Michael's, Christchurcli. The first cliarge was that the Eor. Mr. Perry on various occasions reserved part of the consecrated i.read and wine, thereby using an order or form not authorised. The defence was that he was authorised to reserve tlie sacrament by his bishop, in, other . words, with tho .lawful authority of the bishop of tho diocese. It was tho opinion cf the members of • (lie court, except the Bishop of Auckland, who dissents, that tho Bishop of Christchurcli, in deciding in favour of Mr. Perry's contention, was i isht. Tho Court decided that if Mr. Perry did_ intentionally tench mid advisedly maintain the invoca'ion cf the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Court was of tho opinion that such teaching was contrary to the 22nd article of tho Anglican religion. Tho Court was of the opinion that it was open to 'niestion if' Mr. Perry's admission could bo taken to mean more than an admission of fact of the use of the words, ami tho use of the words did not necessarily involve an invocation, in which case it was no tcacliinc: contrary to canon. Regarding the charge that Mr. Perry in an article in the parish magazine diil advisedly maintain and tciich that confession, and absolution thereafter, aro necessary (which Mr. Perry tl?s court holds it clear.that the Church does not hold the doctrine that confession and absolution thereafter are necessary therefor. It is for jthe 'liishop of Christchurcli to decide what, if any, penalty is to be imposed. The judgment is riven, on fourteen charges, and the court direct' tho costs to be taxed bv the charoAllor of the diocese of Dunedin and paid by the anpeHant and respondent into the court in edual proportions and paid out by the registrar to those entitled.
