The Hon. D. H. Guthrie is leaving for Feilding to-doy. ITc is to unveil an honours hoard ,in the Rangitikei Club this evening, and on 'Saturday and Monday he will take part in the peace celebrations in the town. The officer who arrived in command of the troops on the Kigoma (Lieutenant-' Colonel G. Barclay, V.D.) is well known both in Territorial and St. John Ambulance circles it\ the Dominion.' He was officer commanding the North Island Battalion of Railway Engineers in the Territorial Force, and also held. the. position of commissioner in cnargo'of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in New Zealand. During his four and a half years' service with the N.Z.E.F., Colonel Barclay has been in Gallipoli, Egypt,' France, Belgium, and England. He, was decorated as a Chevalier-- of the Order of Danilo for services in the held, and was three times mentioned in dispatches. Colonel Barclay was largely instrumental in forming the N.Z.E.F. Masonic Association and is president of that body. Mrs. 'Barclay accompanies lier husband from England, and they proceed to Dunediu'.on Saturday night. According to the "Press," a private cable message received in Christchurch 6tates that Colonel the Hon. E. Heaton. Rhodes, M.P., who has been detained in England for some weeksHhrough inabilty to get a steamer, will leave for New Zealand by the Athenic, due about August 23. Major D. J. Swoetzer is relinquishing the appointment of Camp Commandant at Trenthani, and is posted to the Retired List- with the honorary rank of lieutenant-colonel. lieutenant 0. E. Burton has been appointed assistant vocational officer in the Auckland district. Hon. Lieutenant C. A. Head relinquishes the appointment of assistant paymaster at the training camps and his honorary rank. Mr. F. 0. V. Acheson has- been up--pointed io be a commissioner of tlw Native Land Court. - - Last Monday a presentation was niada io the Rev. A. D. Stratford, M.A.; Anglican vicar, on behalf of the parishioners of the Treutham and Upper Hutt parish. The presentation was made in the Odd- . [ fellows' Hall, Trent-ham, and about 90 ' people were present. The presentation consisted of a bag of sovereigns and a fountain-pen,, the latter f-roni the Sunday school children. A suitable gift'was also presented- for Mrs. Stratford. Mr. and Mrs. Stratford leave for England in a few weeks' time. They expect to be away for about three years. .Musical nnd~soci.il items concluded a very enjoyable evening. Captain-J. T. Bosworth has relinquished the appointment of assistant quarter-master-general for Wellington district. Mr. G. H. Malis Moir, head of the,' Native office (Crown Lands Department, Wellington) has resigned his position, and is shortly entering the legal profession in partnership with .Mr. D. M. Findlay, barrister and solicitor. Mr. Moir has, during the last two years, in conjunction witii the Crown Lands Department, given valuable assistance in the administration 'of the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement - Act. ■ ' The death of Mr. Roland Garrett, of Wangauui, at the age of 82, is announced. The late Mr. Uarrett was one of the bestknown civil engineers in the country, and practised his profession till comparatively recently. In his younger days lie served with the Kai Iwi Cavalry in the Maori War. Major (temporary 'Lieut.-Ccionel) R. 0. Chesnev, N.Z.S.C, has been appointed Coast Defence Commandor, Auckland Military District. He is to retain the rank of lieut.-colonel until further notice. Padre Walls, M.C., now Major Walls, of the . Salvation Army, has been 'appointed by Commissioner Hodder to ths I position of Superintendent of Roto-roa [ Inebriate Island, and left yesterday to j take up his duties there. Captain (temporary major) J. C. Hill, consequent on the disbanding of I'ne Provost Corps, rej'uquished the appointment of provost-marshal to the Forces, but retains the temporary rank of major until further notice. t imong the' troops who returned to Auckland by tho Mirama was 2ntl-Licu-'tenant R. S. Judson, 'V.C., D.C.M., and MM Lieutenant Jadson is a married man with four children, and gained all his decorations in oiu month. He will bo tendered a civic recepdon to-day.— Press Assn. Tho death-occurred at Auckland yesterday, at the age of G3 years, of Mrs. William Brown, of "Keewaydin," Lower Hutt. The late Mrs. Brown, who has been lu ill-health for some time past; was staving with her married daughter, Mrs. 0. 'W. Davidson, of Kelburn, at present living at Milford, Takapuna. Her husband, Mr. W. Brown, of the firm of Laery and Co., left New Zealand for America by the Niagara on Juno 23 last, and was duo in Vancouver on Sunday last. Besides her husband and married daughter, the' deceased lady leaves four sons, Messrs. Percy, Frank, Harold, and Roy Brown, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cyril Brown.
