The Waltemata', the first of three vessels building by the Northumberland Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., left tho Tyno on May 23 for her official trials after loading a coal cargo in the Northumberland Dock. She is one of tho Northumberland Shipbuilding Co.'s own specialised type, of which n large number have been built, and which during tile shipbuilding crisis tile Government accepted in place'of their standard design. The vessel has two decks, and ia of the full, Bcantlincd flush-deck typo with a t.g. forecastle and classed 100 Al at Lloyd's. She is 415 ft. in length by 53ft beam by 25Jft. depth)* and carries about 9000 tons d.w. on about 26ft. 3in. draught. Sho has been designed on a lino model to maintain a sea speed of llj knots. Accommodation for the officers and engineers has been arranged amidships in oteel houses; the crow arc nlacod in tho 'tween decks aft. The loading and discharging gear provides for the rapid handling of freight; nine steam winches with a largo number of heavy derricks and derricktables are fitted, and tho hatches are ar- i ranged to be specially accessible. . Tho specification includes electric lighting, wireless telegraphy, steam heating, refrigerator house, etc. The steering gear ! is placed aft with control by telemotor from amidshipß. In addition the vessel has a large ballast capacity for light passages.
