1 — : EDUCATION BOARD'S. SELECTIONS. Eecentlv tho Wellington Education Board, after the chief inspector had coii-" {erred with the headmasters of city and suburban schools. made an advance towards the adoption of uniform school books. It resolved that a text-book for arithmetic should be compulsory in all standards, but that for geography, history. and English tho use of text-books should be considered optional. The board also decided that the text-books, coniDulsorv or optional, should be uniform throughout the district, as follows: Compulsory. "Progressive Arithmetics"; optional. 'Taciiio Geography,". "lessons in Enzlish," Whitcombe and Tombs's "History." and "Vero Poster's Copy Hooks."

The subiect was mentioned again at Yesterday's meeting, when the board resolved that in the infant classes "Blackio's Readers" should be . used. Theso decisions take full effect 'from Januarv 1 next. After that the school hooks used at the public schools in the Wellington district will be uniform. Tho schools are not dependent on the text-books for reading matter. A copy of the "Snhool Journal" is handed to each child, and this periodical is used as a readine- book. The Education Department provides funds for the. purchase ot other reading matter.
