PEACE CELEBRATIONS
MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE , THE SOUVENIR PROGRAMME The Peace Celebrations General Committee met Inst evening. Mr. W. H. P. Barber presided over a large attendance. The fireworks display to be held at Oriental Parade was discussed, it was suggested that tho band rotunda, which was of old wood, was not the saiest place from which to set oil' iireworks. A spot about, two hundred yar'ils further south was favoured by soine lfiem.bers of tho committee. It was finally decided that 11 subcommittee, in conlerenco with the Mayor and officers of the City Council, .should arrange the details to-tlay.
Decoration proposals were also considered, and tiio nnai arrangements were lett with a committee 'that will meet in tho Town Hall this morning. Mr. D. M'Laren presented the report of tho Souvenir Programme Committee. He spoke higiily cl tlie production in hand, and urged that the charge per copy should, be 2s. Two thousand copies would be available on Thursday, and the remainder of the 6000 issue would be available on Friday. He asked tho committee to rescind a previous resolution that the price be Is., and pass a rwi, resolution setting tho price'at 2s. ilr. E. A. Wright, M.P., said thai he understood that it tho whole WOO issut, were sold at Is. per copy the committee would incur loss of something like J2OO or A member reminded the committee that J;3oU. had been allotted to tho production of the programme. The chairman's comment was: "We expected to recover some of that amount. AVe did not expect that it would cost <£350." Sir. T. Forsyth asked what was the cost of tho souvenir in preparation, The chairman replied that it was <£450. Mr. Forsyth, believing that the committee should make no profit on the venture, argued that the price should be Is. till. The price was finally fixed at 2s. per copy. itr. W. Auld moved that no copies whatever he distributed gratis. Mr. J. Lewis moved an amendment that the matter of free copies be left to the discretion of the Programmo Committee. Mr. Auld altered his motion to allow for the distribution of free copies to the Wellington newspapers. Mr. Lewis')) amendment was lost. _ A.further, amendment: "That the free i'jsi.i; oa minted to fit v-ts put, and carried. Mr. Auld's motion therefore lapsed. Mr. Lewis reported that the Citizens' Committees in the suburbs had under-, taken to build bonfires. ill-. 1). il'Ken/.ie said that the Boy Scouts were willing to light bonfires about the city if they were told wliero bonfires were to be found. The Scouts could not bo expected to build the fires. Fivo hundred boys were required to carry lanterns and torches in the procession on Saturday. He had been under the impression that the project of bunting bonfires had been abandoned. Superintendent Tait, of th'j Fire Brigade, reminded the committee that bonfires, in approved places, would be permitted by the City' Council. He.believed that there would be plenty of bonfires whether the committee built them or not. It was decided that there slionld be an "official" bonfire on Mount Victoria. Colonel G. F. C. Campbell said that quite probably the minesweepers would be in port at the time of the celebrations. Their crews would be able, in that case, to take part in ; the procession anii assist with the fireworks. The meeting adjourned till Thursday evening at 8 o'clock. A meeting of the Procession Committee was held afterwards. Colonel Campbell doubted whether it would be possiblo fo use the captured German _guns in the procession. It would be difficult' to obtain horses, liar, lies.?, and drivers for them. The committee discussed the order of the procession, which in due course will be notified by advertisement. Ai; a meeting of the Peace Celebrations Committee this afternoon it was decidedto postpone Children's Day till rite anniversary of the armistice, November 11. It was considered that the weather conditions wero too uncertain for Monday next.
