BOXING
CROYDON SCHOOL TOURNAMENT. The annual boxing tournament of the' Croydon Boys' School, was held last week. The boxing extended over two nights, and was brought to a close on Friday. Thero was a large number of spectators. Mr. Staples was referee, with Mr. Talbot /as time-keeper. The boxing was very good, and the boys, who had been well coached by Mr. Alan Maxwell, showed that they bad a. knowledge of the rudiments of the finer points in boxing. They were scientific, and clever on their feec. In the matter of guarding, which is" generally a weak point wiln boys, they were very good. Ballinger, the winner of the heavy-weight division, well deserved • the prizo for the most scientific boxei. Detailed results are as follow:— Bantam—First round: Liuie (IV) bent .Lysaght (minor),, Acton-Adams beat Nathan, Bennett (minor) beat Dudley, Blundell beat Collins, Beak beat Bennett (111). Second round: Beal beat Lane, Bennett beat Acton-Adams, Blundell, a bye. Semi-iinal: Bennett beat Blundell, Beale, a bye. In tho finul, Beale beat Bennett.
Light-weight—First rouud: beat Fox, Mauoy (major) beat Lane (III;, Ormond (minor) beat Manoy (minor), Sladden beat ffjjlis, Webster beat Hewitt, Stace, a Dye. Second round: Manoy beat Castleberg, Ormond beat Stace, Sladden beat Webster. Semitinals: Ormond beat Manoy, Sladden, a bye. Final: Ormond beat Sladden.
Middle-weight—First round: Bennett (major) bent Corry, Wardell beat Grace, Le Grove beat Murray, Whitehead beat Saxby, Willoughby beat Williams (minor). Second round: Wnrdell beat Bennett, Le Grove beat Whitehead, Willoughby, a byo, Semi-fiimls: Willoughby beat Le Grove, Wardcll, a bye. Final: Willoughy beat Wardell. Heavy-weight:" round: Ballinger beat Hall-Thompson, Williams (major) beat Lane (major), Stevenson beat Strang, Ormond (major) boat Thompson, Nelson beat Lysaght, Lane (minor), a bye. Second round: Ballinger beat Lane, Williams beat Stevenson. Ormond beat Nelson. Semi-finals: Williams beat Oriiioud, Ballinger, a bye. In the final Ballinger beat Williams, who was last year's champion and most scientific boxer.
The Rev. R. H. Hobday, principal of tho 6chool thanked, the parents for their attendance and the officials of tho Wellington Boxing Association for their assistance. Tho gold medal, presented by tho association for the most scientific boxer, was awarded to Bollinger, tho heavy-weight champion.
