THE COAL INDUSTRY
HON. G. W. RUSSELL ADVOCATES STATE CONTROL. By Telegraph—Press Aesnciatloa' Christchurch, July 13. In tho course of a lecture last night the Hon. G. W. Russell expressed the opinion that Ihe private ownership and working of coal mines had absolutely broken down,.and they could not expect the capitalist, who was no fool, to put money into mines for the purpose of receiving a doubtful one or two per cent, return, when he could put, it into broad acres, and get gilt-edged security. The only thing was for the State to take over .the full responsibility of the coal industry, and foot the bill. • The State should assume control of the whole of the mines and deposits of this country, and look after the coal until it reached the retailers Even then there should ■be State wholesale yards, and all retailers should do was to distribute the coal to the people. ■ -..- •-''..-
