PEACE FIREWORKS

DISPLAY FROM ORIENTAL BAY BAND ROTUNDA RESERVE. A confereneco was held on Saturday morning betwoen the Mayor, the Finance Committee of the City Council, and the Peace Committee in connection with the peace celebrations for tho coming weekend. As tho result of tho conference it was decided that the idea of loosing tho fireworks from a, lnilk moored oil Oriental Bay bo abandoned, and that the. display take place from tho Band Rotunda Reserve on Hie Parade, which will be reserved for those actually engaged in the task of lighting tho fireworks. Tho direction in which such fireworks will bo loosed will be seaward, so as to avoid any possibility of accident. On Saturday evening all motor traffic between Clyde Quay Wharf and a point a hundred' yards on the city side of thu kiosk is to be prohibited whilst thepyrotechnic display is in progress, in order to keep tho full width of Clyde* Quay and the Oriental Parade for tho use of pedestrians. The roads and torraces above the Bay and on Roseneath hills should make an excellent vantaga ground for many thousands of peoplo. Tho decision to abandon altogether the decoration of tho city has now been modified, and an arrangement has been arrived at to decorate several of tha most prominent corners of the city, notably the Royal Oak and Stewart Dawson's corners, and the committee requests that tho general public should, by thb uso of bunting and streamers, make their places as bright and festive as tho great occasion domands.

A button medallion is to be given to. tho school children in lieu of -sweets, the idea being held that the souvem> could be kept for all time.

The coming week-end will be devoted to peace celebrations. Saturday may bo described as People's Day, and Monday will be Children's Day. Wellington will bo en fete, and although certain restrictions have been imposed upon the, pity's illuminations and upon the suburban train services, which may prove disconcerting, tho success of (lie day is considered to bo assuied. Newtown Park is io bo tho chief scene of tho celebrations, and there .sports will be tho order of the day. But tho main attraction will be the procession from the city to Newtown. It is not definitely known who. will form this procession," but returned soldiers will certainly take part in it, and probably Boy Scouts and Cadets. Trade exhibits are also to be part of the procession, and the Peace Celebrations Committee is asking all those who can furnish trade exhibits to communicate with tho organising secretary. Mr. J. Lewis, 18 Grey Street. An oliicial announcement- appears in this issue.
