THE CELEBRATION OF PEACE

$ The conditions in which the local Peace' Celebration Committee is called upon to carry out its responsible duties entitle it to general sympathy. Owing to the restrictions imposed by the coal shortage the committee is almost in the unhappy position of being required to make bricks without straw,- and its problems arc not lightened when account is , taken of the average weather experienced at this time of the year.. In the circumstances the programme drawn up for the Peace holidays bears witness to creditable enterprise on the part of those responsible for its compilation. Bad weather, of course, would largely upset the arrangements made, but this would have been the case even if there had been no such special difficulties and restrictions as the coal shortage has imposed. Given good weather, the celebration ought to be in every way a bright and joyous occasion. Good sense has been shown in the decision to limit the duration of the open-air ceremonies in which school-children are to take part on Monday forenoon. An addition to the programme that might bo worth considering would be that of indoor entertainments for the school-children on Monday afternoon, and special provision might be made for children also in the case of the entertainments which are to supplement the grand concert in the Town Hall on Monday evening.
