MR. HUGHES'S ACTIVITIES IN . ENGLAND. London, July 10. During his visit to England, Mr. William M. Hughes was actively engaged in expanding and improving the business relations of Australia and Great Britain. Matters were sufficiently advanced before he sailed for homo to appoint a committee to carry on the scheme to a practical issue, and forming the nucleus of a larger body to develop the plan. Mr. Hughes hopes to secure the co-operation ol' the various States in order to prevent competition in selling Australian products, in order to sceuro the best prices. While trade with Britain is to be developed to tho .uttermost, Air. Hughes has also arranged for representatives of France and Italy to co-operate with Iho British committee in placing Australian products in those countries. Before Mr. Hughes left on his return to Australia a representative of an important automobile firm approached him with a view to establishing works in Australia. Tt is 'believed that the new scheme to improve Australia's markets abroad may lead to the reorganisation of the High Commissioner's department in tho direction of bringing it in closer end more active touch with commercial affairs, instead of being largely an official! depart-ment.—Aus.-N.Z.
