ATTEMPT TO DERAIL A 'JT.AIN. liy Telegraph—"~ms Association '.Wanganui, July II._ A deliberate attempt to derail n train near- Miunitahi (nine miles from Patea) was frustrated yesterday afternuon by Fireman Annabel!, who saw obstruction* on the line while the special was ascending a hill. Driver Allan promptly applied the brakes and the train wan . to a standstill. An examination of the line showed that four different lots of material had boon placed acioss the rails. The first cousisted of two shovels, a few yards further on four picks and several shovels and spades (apick head had been laid lengthwise on the rail), and a new kerosene tin full of bolts had been placed on the rails. A heel plate had also been placed on the rail, while twenty yards further on a piece of rail about 3ft. long, and a board 2ft. wide had been put in position. Tho material was principally platelayers gear, the men working about a mile and a half away from the locality.
