THE CITTS MILK SHORTAGE. "I not ice. thai there is plenty of cheese and butter available for export, and I think it would he better if some of the. milk used for these products were brought to Wellington lor the people," said Councillor C. 11. Chapman at last night's meeting of the City Council, Councillor C. B. Norwood, chairman of the Milk Committee, said the factories which produced cheese and butter were not working now. They operated only in the months when milk was plentiful, and up lo the time when the last factory closed there bad been no shortage of milk iu the oily. A month from now there would be no shortage. Possibly Ui@e would be no shortage in three weeks'. Tho trouble was that farmers got such good prices from tho factories in the summer that they did not try to produce, milk in the mid-winter months. Councillor R. A. Wright, M.P., said the Milk Committee had made every - effort to induce farmers lo produce milk in the winter months. But the change could, not be effected suddenly, and it was not surprising that the farmers preferred to escape the drudgery of winter milking. Councillor Norwood mentioned that the committee had iu hand information regarding a property of about 1000 acres, very suitable lor use as a municipal milkfarm. The land was very good, and the properly was valued at about ,£75,000. It would carry 400 cows, anil if acquired would help to solve the problem of the winter supply of milk.
